so the fitc conference is past but we're still working on beta. i think we'll have a (closed) pre-release this week that should have the api complete, and then we're gonna debug things to a point of stability that it makes sense to have people using it, at which point, we'll release that as beta.
so the new date: on or before april 20.
in trying to get the release out, we've wound up having to cut a major feature, at least temporarily: java 1.1 won't be supported with the beta release. this stinks because of the number of people still using 1.1, but for our primary audience (schools & people using p5 as a sketchbook) they're unaffected. hopefully this is just temporary (or maybe we'll find that nobody cares about 1.1 who knows...)
casey and i had a great time at the fitc conference and being hosted in japan the week prior, thanks to everyone involved...

Are there any possibilities of being part of the beta testers of the closed release?

Glad to hear that the date is not too far in the future.
I can't wait for the new version to come out.
Though it's a small shame 0069 won't quite see it's first birthday

...could be a GREAT time for a multi-platform "alternative to Flash" to appear on the wider scene?

Shhh, don't make them think they need to do more before they release it!
Anyways, fry, i hope you guys get this done soon, after 69 i kinda fell out of processing because i was to impatient for the multi document projects. Glad to see Megabucket is about done!
Oh and i don't think that processing will ever become a "flash killer" unless it implements animation cells, and becomes half animator, like flash is.

yeah, we're not targeting flash... i think if we wanted to make a flash killer, we'd have set out to do that and our stated purpose would have been more specific (and we'd have more on the site about "processing vs. flash" in the competetive shootout sense).
we could have saved a lot of time if we just wanted to build a better flash
i think there are things that are always going to be better in flash, and other types of work that will always be better in processing. but fundamentally (and i can't emphasize this enough), there is no all-or-nothing game.. it's just about tools. do people refuse to use pencils because pens exist? no, you just use them for different things, and for specific reasons.
as i understand it, flash 8 will be better at doing some subset of the pixel editing/image stuff you can do in processing, but with the upcoming beta, there's a lot more things that we're covering that's not focused on moving pixels (opengl, serial, video, etc) and other things that are incomplete but just around the corner (export to application and more).
at any rate, beta is coming very very soon, casey and i have been cooped up all weekend and simon greenwold's recently been lending a hand on the 3D stuff (proper lighting and camera support) so we're antsy to get the beast posted. stay tuned...
